With the imminent danger of extinction of house sparrows in the near future, bird lovers and non-government organisations are doing their bit to save them from vanishing altogether.

Plant & Animals Welfare Society- Mumbai, recently launched its Sparrow "Conservation Mission (SCM) — a programme aimed at creating awareness among locals about the danger to the sparrows and the need to save them.

The Sparrow Conservation Mission will include series of programmes which will focus on providing shelter, food, and water to the bird. "This will be an on-going programme as a part of which various events and awareness drives will be held to educate people on the need to save the bird from being lost forever," said Sunish Subramanian, founder, PAWS-Mumbai.

The number of sparrows had dwindled largely in city areas due to urban style of living and loss of greenery. Today, there are hardly any means for their water and food, which was otherwise available to them in plenty in early days.

"In the present scenario there are instances when these birds drink water from the gutter. The scorching heat makes living more difficult for them," he added. The organisation held an event to distribute sparrow homes on account of International Sparrow Day celebrated every year on March 20.

PAWS has been involved in protection and conservation of animals and birds for which it has been educating masses on importance of saving environment.
